Review: Cultured Biome Calm Cream – A Barrier-Friendly Moisturiser for Sensitive Skin

If you’ve got sensitive skin, you may be looking for a moisturiser that doesn’t just hydrate but also calms and restores. Meet the Cultured Biome Calm Cream by Cultured Biomecare, a British skincare brand. With a microbiome-centric formulation, this cream aims to soothe redness, strengthen the skin barrier and support skin’s natural resilience. I’ve been using it for a while and here’s my honest review. If  you read my blog, you should know I have sensitive skin and I use products created specifically for this type of skin. What does it do and how to use it?

The brand Cultured Biomecare describes the Calm Cream as a “soothing, anti-redness moisturiser that replenishes and protects the skin barrier, supporting microbiome.”

Key claims include:

  • Anti-redness and calming effect for reactive skin.
  • Fragrance-free and pH-perfect (so kind to sensitive skin).
  • Powered by a complex of “super-ferments” and prebiotics/postbiotics: fermented mushroom, micro-algae extract, inulin (prebiotic), fermented hyaluronic acid, etc.
  • Specifically designed for barrier-repair, microbiome support and visible reduction of redness and irritation.

Cultured Biome Calm Cream comes in a very convenient bottle (60 ml) with a pump. I personally like this because it is quite a hygienic way to use the cream – it means no bacteria or dust can get inside and mix with the cream! However, I think that a cap would be useful to provide a much better protection from dust.

The cream itself has white color and a soft pleasant texture. I find the cream rather rich but not heavy at all, a bit greasy but not too much.

It’s easy to use – like any moisturizer you need to apply it on a clean face in the morning or/and in the evening. The advantage is that it is suitable for use even for highly irritated skin and acne prone skin.

What are key ingredients?

  • Lactobacillus Ferment: Helps promote a healthy skin microbiome, which can calm redness, reduce irritation, and improve overall skin health for a more radiant and balanced complexion.
  • Squalane: Helps smooth and soften your skin.
  • Piperonyl Glucoside: an antioxidant and has soothing properties, helping to calm sensitive skin and reduce redness.
  • Inulin (prebiotic derived from chicory/agave): A prebiotic that supports a healthy and strong skin barrier
  • Fermented micro-algae extract / postbiotic lactococcus ferment: These boost skin renewal, help reinforce skin’s natural repairing mechanisms and strengthen the microbiome.

Another key points mentioned by the manufacturer:

  • 100% Vegan
  • Cruelty Free

What is the effect?

I’ve been using Cultured Biome Calm Cream for a few weeks and quite like the cream! It provides perfect skin hydration, especially for colder autumn days. I feel it is rather rich but not heavy at all. This hydration is enough for my oily skin but may probably not be enough for dry skin. The big advantage is that the cream can be applied both in the morning and in the evening, however, I prefer to use it as my day moisturizer. This is because in the evening I apply Pai Skincare Carbon Star Detoxifying Overnight Face Oil

To be honest, I don’t feel much of its cooling effect, just very slight. Cultured Biome Calm Cream absorbs quickly, and then I apply my BB cream. I must say that after applying BB cream I can clearly see the smooth effect of the cream which is absolutely fantastic! The skin looks really healthy and smooth! The moisturizer really works because my skin has become less red and irritated! The cream saves my skin in these windy cold days from the extreme weather conditions of autumn! It is also great that it supports healthy skin microbiome and skin barrier at the same time.

In the end, I am happy I added Cultured Biome Calm Cream in my basic skincare routine because it is not heavy and provides enough moisturization for a sensitive skin. I like that it is not a simple moisturizer but also supports skin barrier and skin microbiome. It also is a perfect moisturizer to use under BB cream or foundation and its soothing effect is really visible. All this also makes it suitable for acne prone skin which needs a hydration without irritation. Among its disadvantages I would mention the high price but you can find it selling at a discounted price too. Absolutely worth trying!
